Thai Boxing

Thai boxing is both a sport and means of self defense. Contestants are allowed to use almost any part of their body: feet, elbows, legs, knees, and shoulders, are all weapons. The playing of traditional music during bouts makes for even greater excitement. There are two venues in Bangkok for this type of sport.

Ratchadamnoen Stadium (Tel: 281-4205), Ratchadamnoen Nok Road, open every Monday and Wednesday at 6.00 p.m., Thursday at 5.00 and 9.00 p.m., and Sunday at 4.00 and 8.00 p.m. Lumphini Stadium (Tel: 251-4303), Rama IV Road, every Tuesday and Friday at 6.00 p.m. and Saturday at 5.00 p.m.

International visitors who wish to learn Thai boxing can contact the Muay Thai Institute, 336/932, Prachathipat, Thanyaburi, Pathum Thani 12130, Tel: 992-0096-9

back to topGolf in Bangkok

Krungthep Kreetha
One of the older Bangkok course Krungthep Kreetha is a very pretty layout which has recently undergone a total rebuild. There are several hidden water hazards and numerous OBs on the course. Trees alongside nearly every fairway call for accurate tee shots. The greens, many of which are elevated, are among the truest in Thailand. A pleasant new clubhouse has been opened and the food and service are as good as ever.

Natural Park Ramindra
The Jack Nicklaus designed course here measures 7,126 yards from the "tiger'' tees and provides a tough test for all classes of player. Huge lakes come into play on almost half the holes and at the sixteenth players have to hit their approach to an island green. Putting surfaces are good, but most of the greens are well guarded by deep bunkers. The palatial clubhouse has several restaurants and function rooms.

Navatanee Golf Club
Navatanee is Thailand's first golf course designed by a foreign architect. The course was created especially for the 1975 World Cup and has since become a golfing Mecca for first time visitors to the country. Navatanee offers a tranquil retreat full of mature trees and beautiful shrubs. The greens are well protected by bunkers and there is a mix of wide and narrow fairways, with water coming into play on five holes. The par four sixth hole and the par five ninth hole across the lake are among the best in the country. The clubhouse facilities are excellent.

Panya Indra Golf Club
Conveniently located just north of the city, this 27 hole design is extensively landscaped, with water coming into play often. The par three holes are perhaps the most testing aspect of this course and on four occasions the player has to hit his tee shot over water. There are also some very testing dog-leg holes on each of the three nines. The course is floodlit for night golfing and the clubhouse facilities are of a very high standard.
